Methylene blue and filtration: a delicate balance
Using methylene blue in an aquarium is a double-edged sword. While it kills parasites, it also attacks the living heart of your ecosystem: the biological filter. Understanding the interaction between this dye and your filtration system is crucial in order to avoid an ecological disaster in your tank.
The impact on nitrifying bacteria ("the good bacteria")
A healthy aquarium relies on the nitrogen cycle, managed by colonies of bacteria (Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter) lodged in the sponges and ceramics of your filter. These bacteria convert toxic ammonia (fish waste) into less harmful nitrates.
The problem: methylene blue is a bactericide (weak, but sufficient). At a therapeutic dose (1–2 mg/L), it inhibits or kills a significant proportion of these filter bacteria.
The consequence: the "crash" of the cycle
If you pour methylene blue straight into an established tank:
- The filter bacteria die.
- Ammonia and nitrites are no longer broken down.
- A few days after treatment, just as the fish appear to have recovered from their illness, they suddenly die of poisoning (a nitrite spike).
The solution: this is the main reason why treatment is always recommended in a hospital tank (a bare tank, with no biological filter, in which the water is changed manually every day) rather than in the main tank.
Managing filtration during a treatment
If you are forced to treat the whole community tank (for example during a general outbreak of white spot), follow this strict protocol to save your filter:
- Disconnect the filter: remove the biological filter media (ceramic noodles, sintered-glass beads) from the circuit.
- Keep them alive: place this media in a bucket filled with aquarium water (taken before treatment) together with an air stone. The bacteria will survive several days or weeks provided the water is aerated.
- Mechanical filtration only: in the treated tank, leave nothing but a simple synthetic sponge (filter wool) to circulate the water and trap large particles. The methylene blue will stain it permanently, so discard it after use.
- Monitoring: during the treatment without biological filtration, monitor ammonia and nitrites daily. Carry out small, frequent water changes to compensate for the absence of biological filtration.
The role of activated carbon: friend or foe?
Activated carbon is a very powerful adsorbent material used in certain chemical filters. Its interaction with methylene blue is total.
During treatment: the foe
Activated carbon adsorbs methylene blue with formidable efficiency.
- If you leave carbon in the filter, it "draws in" the entire medication within a few hours.
- The water becomes clear again, but the treatment is brought to an abrupt halt before it has had any chance to act on the pathogens.
- The golden rule: always remove the activated carbon before pouring in the slightest drop of methylene blue.
After treatment: the friend (the cleaner)
Once the disease has been cured, carbon becomes your best ally for cleaning the tank.
- Carry out a large water change (30–50%).
- Place fresh activated carbon in the filter.
- Within 24 to 48 hours, the carbon will absorb the remaining dissolved dye. The water will become crystal clear once more.
- Discard the carbon after use (it is saturated with dye and toxins).
