Methylene blue: plants and invertebrates, what are the risks?
The modern aquarium is no longer merely a fish bowl: it is often a complex ecosystem home to live plants, delicate shrimp and useful snails. When a disease has to be treated, the question of the compatibility of these inhabitants with methylene blue becomes crucial.
Impact on invertebrates (shrimp and snails)
Invertebrates are physiologically very different from fish. They are often far more sensitive to chemicals (such as copper, which is fatal to them).
Shrimp (Neocaridina, Caridina)
Unlike copper-based or formaldehyde-based treatments, which are lethal to crustaceans, methylene blue is relatively well tolerated by shrimp at low therapeutic doses.
- Acute toxicity: low. It does not kill shrimp instantly the way a slug killer would.
- Respiratory risk: the dye affects gas exchange. In fragile shrimp (such as the Crystal Red), a long treatment can weaken them.
- Recommendation: avoid it if possible. If treatment is unavoidable, monitor their behaviour. If they try to climb out of the water, carry out an immediate water change. The "flash bath" (see fish treatment) is preferable to prolonged treatment.
Snails (Nerites, Ramshorn snails, Apple snails)
Gastropods are robust in the face of methylene blue.
- Tolerance: very good.
- Aesthetic effect: the dye may stain their porous shell irreversibly, especially on eroded areas.
- Usefulness: beware, if you kill the snails by mistake (massive overdose), their decomposition will quickly pollute the water.
Impact on live plants
Methylene blue is not a herbicide (unlike salt, which scorches plants), but it has a devastating indirect effect on flora.
Blocking photosynthesis
To grow, plants need light, and more specifically the red and blue parts of the spectrum.
- The "filter" effect: water treated with methylene blue turns dark blue. It acts as a powerful optical filter that blocks the penetration of light.
- Consequence: photosynthesis comes to a halt.
- Short treatment (3 days): robust plants (Anubias, Java Fern) slow their growth but survive unharmed.
- Long treatment (> 1 week): demanding plants (carpeting plants, Rotala) become etiolated, shed their leaves and eventually rot, polluting the water.
Staining of plant tissues
Fine-leaved plants (Cabomba, Elodea) may absorb the dye. They take on a greyish-blue tinge and may die from direct cellular toxicity if the dose is high.
Advice: if you treat in a community tank, keep the duration to the strict minimum and carry out large water changes afterwards to restore the clarity of the water and the penetration of light.
The irreversible aesthetic impact: silicone
It is not a living organism, but it is a major concern for aquarists.
- Transparent seals: clear aquarium silicone absorbs methylene blue instantly. It will turn permanently light blue or green. No amount of cleaning can restore its transparency.
- Decor: limestone rocks, roots and porous resin decorations will likewise be stained for life.
Conclusion: to preserve the look of your "aquascaping" and the health of your delicate plants, the use of a hospital tank (bare, without decor or plants) remains the only recommended professional practice.
