Dyeing paper with methylene blue: a creative and technical approach
Although less well known than textile dyeing, colouring paper with methylene blue offers fascinating possibilities for artists, document conservators and enthusiasts of creative chemistry. Its ability to bind to cellulose fibres (with or without a mordant) makes it possible to create shades ranging from a diaphanous sky blue to a deep midnight blue.
Why use methylene blue on paper?
Unlike modern inks or watercolour, methylene blue possesses unique properties:
- Chemical reactivity: it responds to changes in pH and oxidation, allowing dynamic effects.
- Transparency: it behaves like a glaze, letting the texture of the paper show through.
- Cost: a minute quantity is enough to colour large surfaces.
Materials required
- Papers: watercolour paper (cotton), washi paper (long fibres), filter paper (for chromatography), or recycled paper. Papers that are 100% cotton give the best results.
- Methylene blue solution: a 0.1% or 1% solution depending on the intensity desired.
- Trays: plastic dishes (photographic type) for immersion.
- Brushes/Sponges: for localised application.
- Gloves: essential, as the dye stains the skin instantly.
Dyeing protocols
1. The immersion technique (soaking)
This is the simplest method for obtaining a uniform shade.
Protocol:
- Prepare a dye bath in a dish with lukewarm water and a few millilitres of methylene blue solution (aim for a medium blue colour in the tray).
- Immerse the sheet of paper dry or previously dampened (for a gentler diffusion).
- Leave to soak from 30 seconds (pale blue) to 10 minutes (saturated blue).
- Remove the sheet carefully (take care, wet paper is fragile).
- Drain and leave to dry flat on a non-absorbent surface (glass, Perspex) or hang it up.
Tip: the paper will look much darker when wet than once dry. Anticipate this loss of intensity (around 30%).
2. The wash technique (brush application)
For graduated tones or specific areas.
Protocol:
- Secure the paper to a board.
- Lightly dampen the surface with a sponge ("wet-on-wet" technique) for soft edges, or work on dry paper for crisp edges.
- Apply the diluted methylene blue solution with a wide brush.
- To lighten an area, blot immediately with absorbent paper or add pure water.
3. Texture and crystallisation effects
Methylene blue tends to crystallise as it dries when it is highly concentrated, creating a golden/bronze metallic effect on the surface (the famous "sheen" of the solid crystals).
"Bronzing" protocol:
- Prepare a saturated solution (or use the 1% solution undiluted).
- Apply in drops or pools on the paper.
- Leave to dry without touching.
- As it dries, the densest areas will develop a characteristic bronze metallic sheen, contrasting with the deep blue.
Fixing and stability
Methylene blue on cellulose (paper) is not indefinitely stable in light (it is not "fast-dyed" like indigo).
- Light: direct and prolonged exposure to sunlight will fade the shade (photodegradation). For artworks, the use of an anti-UV varnish is recommended.
- Oxidation: over time, the blue may shift slightly, especially on acidic papers. Use acid-free papers for better conservation.
Scientific and educational applications
Paper chromatography
Methylene blue is often used to demonstrate chromatography. A drop of a mixture (blue plus another dye) on a piece of filter paper, dipped in a solvent (water or alcohol), will separate the components, with the blue migrating at a specific rate.
Revealing texture
In conservation work, a very dilute solution can be used to reveal fibres or watermarks that are barely visible, although its use is limited by the risk of permanent staining.
Managing accidental stains on documents
If a drop falls on an important document: do not try to wipe it (this spreads the stain). Blot vertically. Complete removal is very difficult on paper because the dye penetrates the fibre. Exposure to UV can fade the stain over time, but risks damaging the paper.
