Dealing with stains: how do you clean up methylene blue?
It is the dread of every user, from the novice chemist to the seasoned aquarist: a drop that falls, a poorly resealed bottle, and there appears an intense blue stain that seems indelible. Methylene blue is a powerful dye, renowned for its ability to mark anything it touches for a long time. Fortunately, there are both chemical and mechanical solutions for getting rid of it.
Why does methylene blue stain so badly?
Methylene blue is a highly soluble and penetrating cationic dye. On porous materials (wood, fabric, skin), it works its way deep into the fibres or into the upper layers of the epidermis. On smooth surfaces, it can leave a stubborn film if it dries. Its intense colour means that even a microscopic trace remains visible to the naked eye.
Cleaning stains from the skin
This is the most common mishap. Are your fingers blue? There is no need to panic; it is not toxic, merely unsightly.
1. The gentle "chemical" method (recommended)
Methylene blue can be chemically reduced to its colourless form (the leuco form) or broken down.
- Vitamin C (ascorbic acid): this is the most effective trick. Crush a vitamin C tablet, mix it with a little water to make a paste, and rub it over your hands. The redox reaction can decolourise the stain almost instantly.
- Lemon juice or white vinegar: the acidity sometimes helps to dissolve the pigment, although it is less effective than vitamin C.
2. The solvent method
- Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol): effective at dissolving the surface dye. Soak a cotton pad and rub vigorously.
- Nail varnish remover (acetone): very effective but harsh on the skin. Use it sparingly and rinse thoroughly afterwards.
3. The natural method: patience
Methylene blue does not tattoo the skin deeply. It only colours the stratum corneum (dead cells). With the skin's natural renewal and regular hand washing, the stains will disappear on their own within 2 or 3 days.

Cleaning surfaces (worktops, ceramic, glass)
Smooth surfaces (glass, stainless steel, glazed ceramic)
- Bleach: chlorine destroys the chromophore of the methylene blue molecule. A coat of diluted bleach (or neat on white ceramic) makes the stain vanish within seconds. Rinse thoroughly.
- Methylated spirit: an excellent solvent for glass and laboratory surfaces.
Porous surfaces (wood, plastic, tile grout)
This is the most difficult scenario. If the blue has soaked in:
- Bicarbonate of soda and bleach paste: make a paste and leave it on the stain for several hours.
- 90% alcohol: soak the area to try to dilute the dye and lift it with an absorbent paper. Take care not to spread the stain further.
- Sanding: for bare wood, it is sometimes necessary to sand away the tinted surface layer.
Saving clothing and textiles
If a drop lands on a garment, speed is your only ally. Never let the stain dry.
- Immediate rinsing: run the fabric under cold water (not hot, which sets the colour!) at a high flow rate, from the reverse side of the stain to flush out the pigment.
- Stain-removal treatment:
- On white (cotton/linen): diluted bleach is drastic but risks damaging the fibre if left on too long.
- On colours: use an oxygen stain remover (sodium percarbonate) or rub with household soap before machine washing.
- Alcohol: dab the stain with alcohol before washing to help dissolve the blue.

Prevention: the best solution
A few simple habits will spare you a great deal of trouble:
- Work over a tray: a simple plastic tub or a disposable tray will save your table.
- Wear gloves: nitrile or latex gloves are impermeable to the blue.
- Protect the area: a sheet of newspaper or a plastic sheet is essential.
